Castlefield Gallery’s New Art Spaces in Warrington will feature #Rebel Selves, an installation by artist Dawn Woolley, running from October 4th to November 27th, 2024.
This installation offers visitors the chance to explore identity and representation through interactive selfies. Masks, garments, and props are scattered throughout the space, inviting participants to challenge traditional beauty standards and binary gender expectations.
Woolley’s work highlights how selfies can be used for self-expression, especially by those underrepresented in mainstream media, while also acknowledging the pressures of online hostility towards non-conforming identities.
The installation is open to the public on the following dates from 1-6pm:
- Friday, October 4th
- Thursday, October 10th
- Wednesday, October 16th and Thursday, October 17th
- Thursday, October 24th
- Saturday, October 26th
- Tuesday, November 5th to Friday, November 8th
- Thursday, November 21st to Saturday, November 23rd
A contemporary dance performance will take place on Thursday, November 7th, from 6-8pm. The performance explores themes of gender, gesture, and identity within social media culture, with live-streamed selfies captured during the event on the @RebelSelves Instagram page.
For those unable to attend the public open days, private appointments are available by contacting Dawn Woolley at [email protected].
