LGBT+ History Month: Under the Scope

This event organised by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Chester, considers the LGBT+ community’s experience of receiving healthcare and also explores, from the point of view of healthcare practice, some of the issues and health inequalities many LGBT+ people still face today.

Debz Butler – Don’t fear the smear: LGBTQ+ people and Gynaecology
No one enjoys a smear test, but with studies showing that uptake is lower amongst the LGBTQ+ population, something needs to change. This discussion address the differing health needs of the LGBTQ+ community within gynaecology and how those without a cervix can support those who do.

Debz Butler is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Chester. She has over 10 years of clinical experience in oncology, including gynaecology oncology. Her research interests include how we meet the needs of oncology patients from under-represented populations and how social media impacts oncology knowledge.

Alice Hickinbottom – NHS here for you but not me
In this talk, Alice addresses the difficulties she has experienced while trying to get health-related support for things from mental health to transition related support, even support with injuries. She will cover the concerns she has experienced due to her gender identity when going to the hospital. She writes: “Do you know what it is like to have to prove your identity just to check into an appointment only to get looked at questioningly as you go to take a seat? To get halfway to the GP or pharmacy only to think, ‘damn, did I forget my ID’? Well take a walk down memory lane with me, and don’t worry it will get better with time.”

Alice Hickinbottom is an Archaeology student at the University of Chester and President of the University’s LGBTQIA+ Student Society.
