This new exhibition by Anna FC Smith explores the theatre and spectacle of punishment and order. Inspired by items in the Museum’s collections and Warrington’s connections with John Howard and his publication The State of The Prisons of England and Wales, Smith has researched public punishments in Warrington and created new work that references the courtroom through the use of ceramic chickens and rodents, playing out the actions of humans.
The resulting show examines the methods and rituals around social control and brings into question ideas of power, mob mentality, public entertainment and our need to shame others.
Anna FC Smith is Wigan-based multimedia artist exploring history and communal traditions through sculpture, performance, and socially engaged activity. Through research, crowdsourcing knowledge and collaborating on archival research, her work covers politics, and performative space; the places where people commune and enact daily or ritualistic activity. She is drawn to the irreverent as well as the pomp of societal structures. Her work also explores the role history can play in interpreting the present. She studied Critical Fine Art Practice at the University of Brighton, graduating in 2007 and has exhibited internationally.
