Warrington is celebrating the extraordinary contributions of local volunteers, with Warrington Litter Networks and the Museum of Policing in Cheshire both receiving the King’s Award for Voluntary Service 2025, the highest honour a local volunteer group can receive and equivalent to an MBE.
The Litter Networks, a coalition of a dozen litter-picking teams working together since 2019, have collected over 40,000 bags of litter across the town.
KBT Litterheroes Ambassador, Tony Dixon said: “We are very honoured and delighted that the work of Warrington’s Litter Volunteers has been recognised. Our volunteers’ commitment to tidying our town has shone through, and this award gives us extra motivation to continue improving the local environment.”
Meanwhile, the Museum of Policing in Cheshire, based in Warrington’s Arpley Street Police Station, has been described as a “jewel in the crown.” Established by retired officers 20 years ago, the museum preserves the history of policing in Cheshire, showcasing uniforms, helmets, vehicles, and more. The museum is run entirely by 21 dedicated volunteers and welcomes thousands of visitors each year.
Museum Manager Peter Hampson said: “I marvel every day at the work our volunteers put in. They are always smiling and enthusiastic, and I am so proud of them all. This award acknowledges the huge effort that goes into running the museum and engaging the community.”
The award was announced on Friday, November 14th, the King’s Birthday, and recognises volunteer groups across the UK for outstanding service to their communities. Both Warrington Litter Networks and the Museum of Policing are shining examples of the difference volunteers make in Warrington every day.
Cheshire Chief Constable, Mark Roberts QPM. MSc, BA (Hons), added: “This is a tremendous and well-earned honour for our incredible volunteers at the museum. As well as celebrating the Constabulary’s rich history the team do incredible work engaging our local communities and bringing the public and the force closer together. We are all honoured that the team has been recognised by the King in this way and I hope it will highlight the museum to even more people and encourage them to visit.”
